A modern lakefront home that couldn't exist — until we solved the problems standing in its way.
The Callan home delivers what the clients wanted from day one: beach access, open water views, and a modern design that belongs on the site. Getting there meant solving problems.
The Build
Design
Modern home integrated into a lakefront setting; open plan living with direct beach access and unobstructed water views.
Lower Level
Full basement with hillside light wells and 10-foot ceilings — as bright and livable as anywhere in the home.
Power
No utility connection on site — power brought in from the road above, fully resolved before construction began.
Water
Lake-fed treatment system designed and installed specifically for this property.
Foundation
Extensive geotechnical investigation and soil monitoring maintained throughout construction under large excavation walls.
Challenges & Context
This site had no power and no water. Both problems had to be solved before a wall went up. The site had a 1km long driveway with multiple switchbacks and a 12% grade. Getting equipment and materials was a constant challenge to be navigated throughout the construction. Add large excavation walls on a sloped lakefront lot requiring geotechnical sign-off throughout construction, and this project tested every part of our process.
A home that exists today because we found a way when there wasn't one.
